They came from far and wide, from California, Canada, Texas and Puerto Rico to the Naples Beach Resort and Golf Club in Naples, Florida for a Comets all-class inclusive reunion.  Every now and then, alumni peered into the Hospitality Room to see if they recognized anyone. Suddenly, some rushed inside to give and receive hugs and handshakes.  From alumni who graduated from Commonwealth back in 1963 to the youngest class in attendance 1987, came together on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday June 25-28, 2009 for a weekend filled with laughs, story-telling, and guessing games geared at finding out who each other were, whereabouts of others, and updates on school news.

Over 200 alumni and family members were present to celebrate the third reunion celebrated in Naples, Fl.;first one dating back to 1992, then followed in 1997, both under the auspices of Jody Nugent, 1971 and Kata Carbone, 1970. –who again lent their expertise this time around.  In spite of the economy and the swine flu threat, we are glad to report that this reunion was also a success.

To make the weekend more meaningful, CPS assisted by other alumni, showcased school memorabilia at the Hospitality Room.  These included Commencement Exercise Programs dating back to first graduating class 1961; other novelties included were football roosters, news clippings on school history, school apparel, including: jerseys, cheerleading sweaters, costumes worn at plays and musicals.  Some of the costumes featured were Pedro Gumbe’s, class of 1977, Pajama Factory Softball Team shirt worn in the 1975 Spring Musical Pajama Game and jacket worn as a member of the Barbershop Quartet in the Spring Musical The Music Man.  Jeannette Mirabal, class of 1976 bought her famous cigarette holder from the Musical Guys and Dolls. Christina Pascual, class of 1984, provided a huge post-board with pictures from the eighties and Karen Rand, class of 1975 an album filled with pictures from the seventies. Jean Williams, wife of former headmaster Col. Williams was kind enough to donate some books with mentions of Col Williams providing a piece of his military history.  In the background, alumni were delighted listening to a sound track recording of a live performance of a CHS Theater in the Round production of The Music Man, courtesy of the Davidson Family.

The reunion began with a Welcome Reception Dinner on Thursday which included a pasta, beef, and turkey stations, and seafood trays, among many the large variety of menu selections.  Alumni were welcomed by headmaster Richard Marracino and alumni director Kathy Roman.  Ms Lillian Lewis – Marracino briefly gave a testimonial on the virtues of CPS and how daughter Dr. Natanya Marracino, class of 1997, benefitted from a fine education at CPS. Alumni took the opportunity to reconnect.

The following day, alumni were treated to a delicious brunch while they listened to our headmaster’s Mr. Marracino’s update including school enhancements, events, future projects, and  the need to continue supporting school fundraising efforts.  Many were in awe to view the school’s transformation and learn of recent accomplishments showcased in a slideshow simultaneously.  Following the brunch, alumni retreated to the Watkins Field for a group picture wearing the Comets t-shirt available for sale that weekend.  Alumni were happy to learn of Pedro Gumbe’s, class of 1981, disposition to become the President of the Comets Alumni Association since he brings vast experience in class reunions having spearheaded the 2002 reunion in Puerto Rico.

After the brunch some headed off the Tin City, Fifth Avenue South, Third St, great for shopping, dining or just sightseeing.  Others went off to play at the hotel’s championship golf course, while others just lounged around at the pool or enjoyed the beautiful gulf shore and/or the most spectacular sunset at the Naples Pier.

Bringing close to a delightful week-end, Saturday’s Dinner Dance offered a sumptuous dinner, photographer, a DJ and live music.  The guest speaker, Harold (Biff) Nugent, class of 1963, delivered a riveting speech that paved the way to a night filled of camaraderie and school spirit.  A cherished moment was when former Spanish teacher Ms. Olga Merediz accompanied the Tony Pastana  Band with her impassioned rendition of  Guantanamera.  After that point, alumni  "got their groove on” and danced the night away until 1:00 am … making it a weekend to remember.

Recognizing that we are all stewards of those who have gone before us and leaders to those who may follow, I am honored to have worked towards making this reunion a reality--and a new page in CPS’ history. I look forward to many more reunions in the future.  Special thanks to those who helped plan this wonderful reunion and especially to everyone who attended making it a stellar event!

Note:  If anyone has pictures and/or stories to share from this Reunion or their time at CPS, please contact me at kroman@cpspr.org so we can add them to the website and/or memory book.  Thank you.
